  1. Hoi An lantern festival   

Held on every full moon night according to the lunar calendar, the ancient town of Hoi An is lit up by thousands of colorful lanterns. Locals and tourists release floating lanterns onto the Hoai River, creating a magical and shimmering scene. This festival celebrates the traditional culture and craftsmanship of the local people. It has become an indispensable symbol of Hoi An.

Hoi An is renowned for its traditional Mid-Autumn festival, where children carry lanterns around the ancient streets. The Cau Bong festival in Hoi An is held on the 7th day of the 1st lunar month in Tra Que Vegetable Village – one of Hoi An’s famous craft villages. Locals perform worship rituals and engage in cultural activities such as livestock farming and plant care. This is an important agricultural festival, praying for favorable weather and bountiful harvests while honoring the traditional vegetable-growing profession of Tra Que Village.

The whale worship festival in Hoi An typically takes place in coastal villages that rely on fishing as their main occupation, during the 3rd lunar month each year. It is an opportunity for fishermen to express their gratitude to the sea god for a safe and prosperous year at sea. Main rituals include god offerings, a boat procession, and traditional folk games. The festival is not only a spiritual occasion but also an important cultural tradition for Hoi An’s coastal communities, where visitors can join in activities like tug of war and boat races. 

  1. Thanh Ha pottery village festival   

Thanh Ha Pottery Village Festival hosts an annual festival in July (Lunar calendar) to show deep appreciation to those who pioneered the craft of pottery. The event features pottery exhibitions, skill contests, and folk games related to pottery. Visitors can experience hands-on pottery making and take home unique souvenirs. 

  1. Vu Lan Festival   

The Vu Lan Festival in Hoi An on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month is organized to honor the filial piety of children towards their parents and ancestors, typically held on July 15th of the lunar calendar. The ancient town becomes peaceful and serene, with lanterns floating on the Hoai River. Pagodas and temples host prayer sessions and peace rituals, drawing many Buddhists and visitors. The festival combines cultural and spiritual elements, creating a tranquil and reflective atmosphere in the heart of the old town. 

  1. Long Chu festival  

This unique traditional festival in Hoi An usually occurs on July 15th of the lunar calendar each year. The festival seeks to bring peace, banish evil spirits and disease, and bring health and abundant crops to the people. Long Chu, a dragon boat made from bamboo and paper symbolizing the deities’ vehicle, is carried around the villages. Main rituals include the procession of the Long Chu boat, offerings, and releasing the boat into the river to send the evil spirits away. The festival is both a spiritual occasion and a vibrant cultural event that draws many locals and tourists. 

  1. Lady Thu Bon festival   

Lady Thu Bon festival is held on February 12th of the lunar calendar and it is one of the largest festivals in Hoi An. People gather to worship and express gratitude to Lady Thu Bon, who is believed to have introduced agriculture and fishing and helped locals overcome hardships. The festival includes rituals, water procession, and traditional folk games such as boat races, tug of war, and Bai Choi singing.
