The Dien Bien Phu Historical Victory Museum
The Dien Bien Phu Historical Victory Museum is located on National Highway 279, Street 3, Muong Thanh Ward, Dien Bien Phu City, Dien Bien Province. It is currently the most extensive, grandiose, and modern structure in Dien Bien Province. This building holds significant importance in terms of history, culture, and architecture, as well as the quality and technical aspects of its exhibits. It is worthy of commemorating the victory that was “Resounding through five continents, shaking the Earth.”
The Command Headquarters of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign Historical Site
Located in the midst of a primeval forest within Muong Phang Commune, Dien Bien District, the Command Headquarters of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign Historical Site is situated 25 km as the crow flies and approximately 40 km by road to the east of Dien Bien Phu City . This site originated as the command center for the Dien Bien Phu campaign during the historic anti-French resistance from January 31, 1954, to May 15, 1954. It was here that General Vo Nguyen Giap and the campaign command issued crucial directives and orders for attacks that led to decisive victories in each battle, culminating in the order for a general offensive across the entire front at 3 p.m. on May 7, 1954.
The Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument
The Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument is located on the D1 hilltop stronghold. This cultural and artistic structure embodies profound historical value, humanity, and deep spiritual significance, truly honoring the immense importance of a victory that was “Resounding through five continents, shaking the Earth.” It stands as a source of pride for the people of Dien Bien Province. Over half a century has passed since the Dien Bien Phu victory, yet the Victory Monument still stands tall amidst the historic land of Dien Bien. These revolutionary historical relics are enduring testimonies to the lasting and sustainable development of the heroic Dien Bien Phu land.
Hill A1
During the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, Hill A1 was the site of prolonged, fierce battles and witnessed the greatest sacrifices of our troops. For 39 days and nights of courageous and resilient combat, the revolutionary army had to wrestle with the enemy for every inch of land and every meter of trench. Here, more than 2,500 of the nation’s finest sons laid down their lives. Their blood soaked into every inch of soil and blade of grass, merging with the beloved motherland, creating a legend.
The De Castries Bunker
The De Castries Bunker is named after General De Castries, who used it as his command post during the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. The bunker was solidly constructed and located at the center of the Dien Bien Phu fortified headquarters, in the Muong Thanh Valley, Dien Bien District. To this day, the De Castries Bunker retains its original structure and layout. It stands as a historical testament to the moment our army captured General De Castries at his desk, and the flag of determination and victory was planted atop the bunker, marking the defeat of the French colonialists in Dien Bien and Vietnam.
The Him Lam Relic
Within the Dien Bien battlefield relic complex, there is a lesser-known site: the Him Lam Relic, where the opening battle of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign took place. Historical records indicate that the Him Lam stronghold (Him Lam Resistance Center) marks the first victory of the People’s Army of Vietnam in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. This was one of the most fortified positions of the French army, serving as a protective shield for the outer perimeter of the central sub-sector, guarding Route 41 from Tuan Giao to Dien Bien Phu (now National Highway 279).
The Muong Thanh Valley
Covering an area of over 140 square kilometers, the Muong Thanh Valley is not only famous for its role in the history of the Dien Bien Phu Victory but is also the largest field in the northwest region of Vietnam. In November 1953, the French colonialists transformed the Muong Thanh Valley into a fortified headquarters. This site bore witness to fierce battles between our forces and the French colonizers. After 56 days and nights of resilient fighting, marked by numerous victories and significant losses, we forced the French to surrender, leave the Muong Thanh Valley, and abandon Dien Bien Phu.
Muong Thanh Bridge
In Dien Bien, few historical relics are as unique as the Muong Thanh Bridge, which has stood for over 70 years and once bore the footprints of troops crossing the Nam Rom River to enter and liberate strongholds during the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. The bridge was constructed in 1953 when the French reoccupied Dien Bien Phu. The French hastily built the bridge over the Nam Rom River to facilitate the movement of troops and the transportation of weapons and ammunition from the central fortified headquarters to various sub-sectors within the Muong Thanh Basin. Apart from air routes, this bridge held a particularly crucial role as it was the only and most convenient route for French soldiers and officers in Dien Bien at that time.
Hang Tom Bridge
Not only impressive as the largest cable-stayed bridge in the Northwest region, Hang Tom Bridge also attracts visitors with its beauty, resembling a musical staff stretched over the poetic Da River. Dubbed the most challenging concrete bridge to construct in Vietnam, partly due to its great height and the arduous transportation and construction process through the rugged Northwest mountains, its successful completion is a testament to the dedication of many individuals. The bridge holds significant meaning for the people of the Northwest. Today, it has become a critical transportation hub between Lai Chau and Dien Bien, and a source of pride for the people of the region.
Pha Din
Pha Din is known as one of the “Four Great Passes” in the Northwest region of the country. Here, more than 70 years ago, the whole country was excited to go to war, determined to destroy the Dien Bien Phu stronghold group. Today, on the majestic Pha Din pass, filled with white flowers, visitors can easily see Thai and Mong girls with baskets of plums and oranges to sell to visitors At the top of the pass, where the souvenir shop of Mr. Doan Dinh Quang – a native of Thanh Hoa province, was also noisy and bustling with laughter.
Ban Keo Hill
After over 70 years since the Dien Bien Phu Victory, the historical site of Ban Keo Hill remains well-preserved, becoming a prominent destination attracting visitors. The Battle of Ban Keo, or more accurately termed the “Revolt at Ban Keo,” demonstrated the declining morale of French soldiers and mercenaries after the People’s Army of Vietnam achieved victory in the first battle at the Him Lam Steel Gate on March 13th during the Dien Bien Phu Campaign (1954). Presently, the historical site of Ban Keo Hill is carefully protected by Dien Bien Province and local residents, aiding visitors and tourists in understanding more about our nation’s glorious victory against French colonialism in 1954.
Doc Lap Hill
Doc Lap Hill was the site of the second battle in the first wave of attacks during the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. The Vietnamese army achieved victory after over 3 hours of fighting, boosting the morale of our soldiers, who continued to fight and secure a resounding victory. During the 1954 Dien Bien Phu Campaign, the French army named this stronghold Gabrielle – after a beautiful French girl – to motivate French soldiers to defend the stronghold as if protecting a beautiful woman. On the other hand, Doc Lap (Independence) was the name given by the Vietnamese People’s Army to this stronghold, signifying the solitary nature of the hill amid a flat area in the northern part of the Muong Thanh Valley.
The Chieng So Tower
The Chieng So Tower, located in Na Muong village, Chieng So commune, Dien Bien Dong district, is an architectural and artistic relic that has been preserved through many years. The Chieng So Tower is a remarkable architectural work showcasing the talent and artistic creativity of the Vietnamese and Laotian people. The tower is shaped like a wine gourd, with a wider base and narrowing towards the top. Standing at 10.5 meters tall, the four sides around the base of the tower feature two elephants at the front and two dogs at the back. The Chieng So Tower holds significant historical value as it has helped researchers uncover and affirm the history of the enduring solidarity between the Vietnamese and Laotian peoples.
The Muong Luan Tower
The Muong Luan Tower, located in Muong Luan commune, Dien Bien Dong district, Dien Bien province, is a unique architectural structure with its shape and decorative motifs unlike any other tower currently found in Vietnam. Apart from its historical, cultural, and architectural artistic value, the Muong Luan Tower also holds great significance in terms of the enduring friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Laos, which has been firmly bonded for generations. This architectural masterpiece symbolizes the spirit of national solidarity.
A Pa Chai
A Pa Chai, located in Sin Thau commune, Muong Nhe district, approximately 250 km from Dien Bien Phu city, is the westernmost point of the country, where the border markers between Vietnam, Laos, and China converge. This is known as the tri-border milestone located atop Khoang La San mountain, at an altitude of 1,864 meters above sea level. Every year, it attracts numerous visitors, especially young people from all over the country, who come to visit and conquer this landmark.
Muong Nhe Nature Reserve
Muong Nhe Nature Reserve is classified as one of the country’s significant special-use forests and is an important special-use forest area in the province, with significant influence on the ecological environment. The forest ecosystem here is part of the tropical and subtropical vegetation, with 742 plant species, 257 bird species, 130 mammal and reptile species, and 67 animal species, many of which are listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book. Therefore, this presents favorable conditions and great potential for the development of tourism activities in general and ecotourism – exploration and trekking tourism in particular in the area.
Pa Thom Cave
Pa Thom Cave is one of the prominent landmarks of Dien Bien Province. Upon stepping into the cave entrance, visitors are captivated by the various rock formations resembling elephants and the shimmering stalactites in a mystical emerald green, creating an otherworldly scene reminiscent of a fairyland. This place is known not only as a peaceful border area symbolizing the Vietnam-Laos friendship but also as a majestic mountainous region hiding natural caves amid primeval forests, with lush greenery intermingled with dense stands of white Ban trees, drifting amidst the early morning mist, gracefully reflects on the poetic Nam Nua River.
Xa Nhe Cave
With its captivating and rugged beauty, coupled with convenient transportation as it is located less than 1 km from the main road, Xa Nhe Cave is increasingly becoming an attractive destination for tourists both within and outside the province. The deeper you go into the cave, the more magnificent it becomes, with countless stalactites and stalagmites creating intricate shapes and forms. Although all these natural sculptures are made of stone, each cave chamber has its own unique beauty, stimulates curiosity and inspires a sense of exploration and discovery in visitors. Moreover, since being designated as a national historical and scenic relic, the number of tourists visiting the cave for exploration has been steadily increasing.
Tham Pua Cave
Tham Pua Cave lies at the foot of Pu Hong Cay limestone mountain, in Ban Po area, Chieng Dong commune, Tuan Giao district, Dien Bien province. It served as the location of the first headquarters of the Tran Dinh Campaign (the codename for the Dien Bien Phu Campaign), led by General Vo Nguyen Giap as the Supreme Commander. Here, on January 14, 1954, an important conference took place, deciding the glorious victory of Dien Bien Phu, which resounded across five continents and shook the globe, for our army and people. Tham Pua boasts natural beauty and remains relatively pristine, with a spacious cave interior. The deeper you venture, the more you encounter large, flat stone slabs covered in moss, along with stunning rock walls, ceilings, stalactites, and stalagmites, all of which come together to create a picturesque, poetic, and majestic natural landscape.
Pa Khoang Lake
Located at an altitude of 916 meters above sea level, with a watershed area of 2,400 hectares, Pa Khoang Lake is a significant highlight in the ecotourism of Dien Bien Province. With diverse vegetation, the forests surrounding the lake are rich in various species of animals and plants, both on the surface and beneath the lake. Visitors to Pa Khoang Lake can enjoy boating on its rippling waves, explore the hidden corners of its islands, and discover the wonders of the natural world. Additionally, tourists can trek through the forest to admire the landscape and visit the villages of the Thai ethnic people, engaging in cultural exchanges, enjoying arts performances, and savoring local delicacies such as sticky rice, bamboo-cooked rice, grilled fish, and smoked meat. General Hoang Cong Chat Temple
For the people of the ethnic groups in Dien Bien, General Hoang Cong Chat is a leader with significant achievements in suppressing invaders, expanding territory, and securing borders. The Hoang Cong Chat Temple, associated with the Ban Phu Citadel (Noong Het commune, Dien Bien district, Dien Bien province), has become a sacred place of worship, commemorating the heroic deeds of Hoang Cong Chat, attracting many visitors from both inside and outside the province to pay homage and offer prayers.
Man Village
Nestled amid the deep forests of the remote northern mountains, Ban Man stands out like a prominent highlight in a simple yet captivating rural landscape. This place is famous not only for its stunning and pristine natural beauty but also for preserving the unique traditional features of the local community. When visiting Ban Men, besides admiring the majestic and poetic scenery typical of the Northwest region, tourists also have the opportunity to directly experience the daily activities with the local people: participating in preparing famous traditional dishes, feeding livestock and poultry, fishing in rivers and streams, or foraging for mushrooms and firewood in the forest.
Co My Village
Ban Co My is the home of the Thai ethnic community in Dien Bien. The name “Co My” in Thai means jackfruit. This name originated from the discovery of a large jackfruit tree by the Thai people when they first arrived here, with fruits so big that it took several people to embrace, and they were very delicious. Although the ancient jackfruit tree was destroyed in a big fire in 1945, the locals still keep the name to remember the early days of the village. From Do Cat Command Bunker, you can follow the Nam Ron River northwest for about 8 km to reach Ban Co My. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in cultural exchanges with the local people, enjoy traditional cuisine, and experience the daily activities of the local people firsthand.
Ten Village
Ban Ten is a cultural tourism village in Dien Bien Phu City. Located about 2km from the center of Dien Bien Province, it is one of the most picturesque and attractive destinations in the Northwest region of Vietnam. With its pristine nature, unique landscapes, and distinctive ethnic culture, the village has attracted a large number of visitors every day and during festivals. As it is the home of the Black Thai people, one of the ethnic areas in Dien Bien, Ban Ten holds significant historical, cultural, and tourism value. Phieng Loi
Phieng Loi is a cultural tourism village located about 7km north of the center of Dien Bien Phu City, with a population of nearly 300 people from the Thai ethnic group. It is known for its rich traditional culture of the Thai people. Visitors to Phieng Loi not only experience the unique cultural activities but also enjoy the fresh and pure atmosphere. They can directly experience and savor the local specialties. All ingredients and spices used in the local cuisine here are sourced from the forests: from vegetables, onions to various types of meat and fish, all are grown and raised by the local people and prepared according to the traditional methods of the Thai people.
